Pro Taekwondo Competition is expected to take play in May 2009, if everything goes to plan.

In December of 2008, President Choe (WTF) revealed to the reporters about the "1st WTF Pro Taekwondo World Competition". This had been one of his goals ever since he took office in 2004.

There have been rumours about a pro TKD competition in Korea, but it would not make any sense for WTF to work at any level besides global. WTF official stated, "We have not made an official statement yet. Competition date and specific match details have not been determined. We are evaluating everything very seriously".

The reason for projecting Mexico as the location for the tournament is due to the effects Beijing Olympic had in Mexico. At the time, Mexico won 2 gold medals. Soon after, TKD participants grew by more than 50%, and became a dominant sport in Mexico. WTF plans to encourage this growth and capitalize on the opportunity to further advance TKD's popularity all over the world.

WTF also plans hold "2009 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships" from June 10th to the 14th at Baku, Azerbaijan. WTF will also include the "1st Special World Taekwondo Tournament" (Similar to Special Olympics) as a combined event.
